Ask Real Beer

October 1999

I have a bet with my boyfriend going and I need your help finding the answer. I have heard that Paulaner Hefeweizen has banana in it. Do you know if this is true? Thanks, Currie

From Beer Dave: Madame Currie, the banana taste and flavor of Paulaner Hefe-Weizen is derived from the strain of yeast used in this brew. The Bavarian wheat beer yeast leave a slight banana, clove and bubble gum flavor to these beers at the end of fermentation. Dole and Chiquita are not in the beer business. Beer Dave points out this is a great style which is rich in B vitamins and your coat will be shiny in the morning. Here's to your Health.
