Ask Real Beer
December 1999
I'm living in Austria and enjoying all the great beers made here. However,
an Austrian friend suggested i acquire a taste for wheat beer because he
says it has fewer carbohydrates, less alcohol, and is better for you in
general than regular beer. Do you know if this is true?
From Beer Dave: Austrians have a great example of the wheat beer style brewed in
Salzburg. The Edelweiss brand is available in the Dunkel, Hefe and
Kristall styles. Your friend is correct that wheat beers do have less
calories and carbohydrates. I would not say that it is better for you
than regular beer. All beers consumed in moderation are proven to be a
great health benefit.
