Ask Real Beer
February 2000
Recently I purchased some grain from a local retailer going out of business. He sold me some grain that had a few weevils in it.... Yes he did tell me about it before hand and offered the only solution he knew of to rid me of the pests. I've frozen all the grain to kill off the bugs and have sifted through a screen and this appears to be working. Is there anything else that I can do? Will this method rid me of the majority of the bugs? I'm sure there are still some in the grain. And last...how will the problem effect my brew?
From Beer Dave: In all honesty the grain you bought is for the birds. Literally. Most grain for home brew is relatively cheap. Scatter it in the yard and let the birds have a winter's feast. Double-couponing home brewers really can forget that time is money.
