Why is there a plastic ball in the bottom of a can of Guinness?

From Beer Dave: That ball is what makes the beer in the can taste and pour like Guinness draught at your local pub. It is not a toy and be careful those cans are sharp when you rip them apart. (Editor's Note: Since the question was asked Guinness has added a bottle with a "plastic rocket" to its lineup.)
