Ask Real Beer
June 2000
My question is; Why does my beer spill out of bottle when I open it? No
one can answer this. Hope you can.
From Beer Dave: First I would try to open your beer while the bottle is upright. If
this does not work I would try to open the bottle when you are upright.
If this method fails I suggest that you try beer out of a can. This will
at least reduce the risk of cutting yourself when you open it or drop
it.
In all seriousness you must mean your homebrew. Some bacteria which can
contaminate beer cause this gushing effect upon opening of the bottle.
Especially in batches where priming sugar was added to the bottle before
filling and capping.
