GABF to pick top breweries, brewers
Producers as well as beers to be feted in October
Aug 23, 1999 - The Great American Beer Festival will honor top breweries and brewers for the first time in 1999.
Results from the Professional Panel Blind Tasting (PPBT), where beers are judged in 54 categories, will be used to determine a "Brewery of the Year" and "Brewer of the Year" in five categories. The awards will be given out on the basis of annual beer production with awards going to: - Brewpubs producing 1 to 1,200 barrels per year. - Brewpubs producing 1,200 plus barrels per year. - Microbreweries producing up to 15,000 barrels per year. - Regional breweries producing 15,001 to 500,000 barrels per year. - Large breweries producing 500,001 barrels per year. Each award will be decided on a point system, with each gold medal being worth three points, silver two and bronze one. "The new Brewery of the Year and Brewer of the Year awards allow us to go beyond recognizing outstanding beers, by also recognizing the efforts of outstanding brewing operations, and the talents and creativity of their brewers to recognize the people who make them," said PBBT manager Paul Gatza. The 18th Great American Beer Festival is Oct. 7-9 in Denver, Colo. It will showcase 400 domestic breweries, pouring 1,700 different beers. One lucky individual will be allowed backstage for the judging as the winner of a "You Be The Judge" sweepstakes from Real Beer Inc. and the GABF. The deadline for entries is Sept. 15.
