BridgePort pub overhaul

Nov 19, 2004 - BridgePort BrewPub in Portland, Ore., will close its doors on Dec. 23 for a 10-month renovation. The brewery will continue to produce and ship beer.

The brewery, located at 1313 N.W. Marshall St., has hired Portland-based Holst Architecture for the design of the remodel. BridgePort is Oregon's oldest operating brewery, and opened its on-site brewpub in 1986. A press release states that the remodel will retain the soul of the building, while broadening the appeal of the pub to the booming population of the surrounding neighborhood.

The project calls for major changes, including the creation of an on-site bakery, with freshly prepared breakfast pastries, espresso drinks and express lunch service. The bakery will act as the daily wholesaler for all of the breads, rolls and pastries offered at the pub and its sister restaurant, the BridgePort Ale House on Hawthorne Boulevard.

A large glass atrium will pierce the rooftop in the middle of the pub, allowing a significant amount of natural light to bathe the walls of the now voluminous space. The main bar will expand to two stories, highlighted by a vertical presentation of five stainless steel serving tanks with a brewery-designed draft system.

The largest addition is the development of a rooftop bar three stories above Marshall Street. Scheduled changes for the loading dock call for increased seating capacity and radiant gas heaters.

"Our aspiration for the renovation is to provide a drinking and dining establishment that is an engaging experience for the consumer," said Bob Negele, general manager of retail operations.

Brewing and dock sales will remain open during the remodel of the brewery, which is owned by The Gambrinus Co. of San Antonio, Tex.
