A bit hidden from the tourist haunts of Sacramento's Old Town, the action at Hogshead lies below ground. The path downstairs leads to an L-shaped bar surrounded by brick walls. Wooden booths are on hand for dining while pinball games, dartboards and other tables flank the stage. The Hogshead Lager is straw colored with a light body and residual malty sweetness. The Hogshead Pale Ale is a dark straw color with a light to medium body, mild hoppy flavor and a brief sweetness in the finish. The McSchueter Dark Ale is opaque with a smooth creamy mouthfeel, mild hop flavor, and highly carbonated. The menu offers Pizza, Sandwiches and some bottled beers. Smoking is permitted and contributes to a "cellar" atmosphere. The brewing equipment itself is mostly hidden from view. Wheelchair accessibility is provided via a small elevator. Pints cost $2.25 but there is Happy Hour from 4:30 to 6 PM. When strolling through Old Town, Hogshead is certainly worth a visit to quench your thirst.
