1997 Taos Brewmaster's Festival

The fresh snow on the slopes was less than 48 hours old and the temperature hovered around 30 degrees on Saturday, December 13th, making it easy to enjoy the slopes of the Taos Ski Valley for a great day of skiing. Topping off a perfect day of skiing meant a visit to the Third Annual Taos Ski Valley Brewmaster's Festival. Held once again at Tenderfoot Katie's at the base of the slopes, the event began at 4:30 PM and lasted until 7. The 23 breweries in attendance, all with representatives on hand, were spread comfortably throughout the building's two floors. Downstairs featured fine sandwiches and hors d'oevres from Taos Ski Valley Catering where the crowds lined up to keep the servers busy all night. Also on hand were the great breads from French Riviera Bakery. Long loafs disappeared as quickly as they were sliced for the savvy crowd who appreciated how well the tasty French bread went with the craft beers being served. Upstairs, the Jimmy Stadler band kept the energy level high and crowd musically satisfied.

Now in their third year of hosting this event as a venue for local breweries to showcase their beers, the Taos Ski Valley is proud to have earned the reputation as a "must attend" event for regional craft brewers who are becoming increasingly selective about which events they can support with their limited production. That reputation is building among the locals and visitors who take advantage of the early-season ski rates, consistently good snow conditions, and opportunity to sample quality beers from throughout New Mexico and Colorado. For consumers, this event, while briefer than most, rates as a good value; short lines at the door and booths, 4 ounce tastes in a glass souvenir mug, no "beer police", good music, great beer, tasty snacks, and a spectacular setting in the heart of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Look for this event to grow increasingly popular as word gets out about this choice event.
