The bottled Saku Estonian Porter pours a dense, dark amber color topped by a light head. The early aroma is an intense, rich malty character with notes of dates. The medium-bodied brew produces a very slight hop sensation on the tongue but a full mouthfeel, raisin-like sweetness, and slightly dry finish. At 5.6% alcohol, there is a subtle hint of the alcohol behind the flavors. Overall, an interesting porter, rich in character but without any pronounced chocolate or roasted flavors. The brewery made a strong showing at the 2002 Helsinki Beer Festival so look for a growing presence of Saku beers on shelves across Europe and North America.
