According to a AP Story today, Small Brewers Become Hop Farmers Amid Shortage, many craft brewers are beginning to grow their own hops to combat shortages and price hikes. Perhaps most interesting is that many are looking to the National Clonal Germplasm Repository, a federally funded gene bank. They’re reporting a tenfold increase in requests for hop rhizomes.

I live in Dona Ana County in Southern New Mexico. The Mesilla Valley has long been known for growing chile, cotton, onions, lettuce and numerous other crops. I was wondering if hops could be grown here. I have written to the extension service at NMSU asking this but haven’t received any replies. Does anyone know if my reasoning holds any water. Are we too far south? We have fairly long growing seasons and lots of light.
