Baseball playoffs put beer on the line
Mayors bet craft beer; Boston Beer revives a tradition
Oct 17, 1999 - The link between beer and baseball is particularly evident this time of year - and not only because the Budweiser blimp is so prominent. This year, as well as the usual bets between mayors of competing seasons, Boston Beer Co. has got into the act.
The brewery notes that according to legend, Red Sox team members would often journey to the Haffenreffer Brewery in Jamaica Plain brewery grounds after a game and take "a sip at the source." They would be served a glass of beer from Haffenreffer's copper brew kettles as fortification for the team's next game. Today, Boston Beer Company occupies the old Haffenreffer Brewery and brews Samuel Adams Boston Lager there. To help break "The Curse of the Bambino," Boston Beer Company opened the brewery Saturday and served samples of Samuel Adams Boston Lager to Red Sox fans. Fans were asked only to offer a $1 donation to the Jimmy Fund. The Samuel Adams Brewery will also serve fans Monday from noon to 4 p.m. "Red Sox fans will try anything," said Jim Koch, founder of Boston Beer Company. "I know. I'm one of them. When we first opened the Samuel Adams Brewery a very old Red Sox fan stopped by the brewery one day and told us that when he was a boy he would come here in the early evening hours after the games just to see and talk to the Red Sox baseball players. He told us the players thought that drinking beer at the source had some magical effect. We've been suffering for more than 80 years now. Who are we to argue." On the wagering front: - New York Mayor Rudolph Guiliani will send Atlanta Mayor Bill Campbell a case of Brooklyn beer, New York cheesecake, bagels, and an autographed baseball from Tom Seaver if the Braves win the National League Championship Series. Guiliani will even wear a Braves hat in public. If the Braves lose, Campbell has agreed to send a slab of barbecue ribs, a case of Atlanta's Red Brick Ale, a case of Georgia peanuts, and an autographed baseball from Hank Aaron to New York. Campbell says he'll also wear a Mets hat. - Giuliani and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino have agreed that if the Yankees beat the Red Sox, Giuliani will get some New England clam chowder plus a dozen Fenway franks, a case of Tremont Ale and tickets to the Boston Pops. If the Red Sox win, Giuliani says he'll send Menino Manhattan clam chowder, a case of Yellow Cab Beer, a dozen Coney Island hot dogs and a pair of Broadway tickets.
