Groundhog Brew for Groundhog Day
Punxsutawney club rolls out custom-made beer
Jan 24, 2000 - The Straub Brewery in St. Marys, Pa., has created Groundhog Brew for the Feb. 2 celebration of Groundhog Day in Punxsutawney, Pa.
The first cases of the beer arrived in Punxsutawney last week and officials of the Groundhog Club -- which hosts Phil's forecasting ceremony each year -- expect to have about 4,000 cases of the custom-made beer by Feb. 2. The club recently signed a five-year agreement with Straub to make the beer. A portion of the proceeds go to the club, which will use some of the money to buy food for Phil. Straub is a family brewery with roots that go back to 1869. It is home of the Eternal Tap. Anyone of age is welcome to pour themselves a free beer from the Eternal Tap. In fact, it is OK to pour yourself two. They do ask that you wash your glass when you are done.
