Toast to Jersey beer
Governor declares July 'American Beer Month' in New Jersey
July 6, 2000 - New Jersey Gov. Christie T. Whitman declared July as American Beer Month in New Jersey. Citing the contribution to tourism and promoting responsible enjoyment, she lauded the Garden State Craft Brewers Guild and it's members.
"Craft beer in New Jersey is sometimes overlooked by fans of good beer," said Tom Baker, owner of Heavyweight Brewing and the man who requested the proclamation. "The fact that our governor took the time to recognize the value of our industry is gratifying and hopefully will raise our profile a little." The governor's proclamation was read publicly on the steps of the Philadelphia Art Museum on July 1 as part of the kick off rally for American Beer Month. The rally attracted more than 200 brewery representatives from 20 states.
