Tour de Fat's organizer, describes it as, "a socially conscious campaign to help folks remember the nostalgic joys, artistic expression and slow pace of a cruiser ride."

The event also offers those of legal drinking age the opportunity to enjoy New Belgium's beers, including Fat Tire Amber Ale, well known for its label with a watercolor depiction of a 1950's cruiser.

Tour de Fat begins Sept. 2 in Seattle. Then the New Belgium tour crew heads east through the Bitterfoot Range to Missoula, Mont., for the second stage on Sept. 9. Two Saturdays later, Sept. 23, they hit the Kansas pastures of Lawrence then go down south towards the border for the Austin Tour de Fat on Sept. 30. Then they venture west along Route 66 to the mountains of Arizona in Flagstaff Oct. 7, and finally bring the festival finale to the front lawn of the brewery in Fort Collins Oct. 21.

Tour de Fat event day activities include a morning community bike ride, World Class Cruiser Bike Olympics, smart kid's corner (skills learning and creative area for kids), paperboy challenge, beer-in-hand 1/2 barrel racing, and gas tank toss. Admission is free.

All profits from the activities and New Belgium beer sales go to local, non-profit organizations, many of which are cycling oriented. As well, at each stage local cruiser bike aficionados have been invited to bring out their antique bike collections for display. Live music, good food and New Belgium beers round out the festivities.

Each Tour de Fat stage will culminate with the awarding via raffle of three New Belgium Cruisers 2000 to those in attendance. These bright yellow cruisers are an exclusive edition designed by a team at New Belgium Brewing Co. and crafted by Electra bikes. They are same bikes given in 2000 to New Belgium employees who achieve their one-year anniversary with the company.
