Irish government buys buildings at St. James Gate
Feb 22, 2001 - The Irish government has bought the hop store and surrounding buildings on Guinness' 60-acre brewery site for 15 million, adding to speculation that Guinness is are planning to move out of Dublin city, where it has operated for the past 240 years.
The proposal is for the St. James's Gate brewery to become the site for a new multi-media village called the Digital Hub. The Hub will incorporate the campus of Media Lab Europe, which is a joint venture set up between the government and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Denying rumors it will leave Dublin, a Guinness spokesperson said that the site was surplus to requirements and that the brewery remained committed to Dublin.
