Young people turning away from alcohol is generally welcomed as a positive trend. But it’s bad news both for booze companies, and governments that are watching lucrative alcohol tax revenues dry up along with the populace.
Japan’s National Tax Agency is clearly concerned: It’s taking an unorthodox approach to try to get young Japanese adults to drink more, in an online contest dubbed Sake Viva!
The project asks young people to submit business plans to lure a new generation into going on the sauce, saying Japan’s sake, beer and liquor makers are facing challenges that the pandemic has made even worse.
Contest runs against Japan’s non-drinking trend
Japan’s alcohol consumption has been in a downward arc since the 1990s, according to the country’s health ministry. In the past decade, the government adopted a sweeping plan to counter societal and health problems linked to alcohol, with a focus on reaching the relatively small portion of the population who were found to account for nearly 70% of Japan’s total alcohol consumption.

Singapore’s national water agency wants to educate people on water use through brews.
Singapore’s national water agency, PUB, has found a new way to raise awareness of its water conservation methods: beer, made from purified wastewater.
Made by brewery Brewerkz, NEWBrew is made from NEWater, upcycled from the city-state’s sewers, to educate Singaporeans on the importance of water recycling. The beer went on sale this past April.
“I seriously couldn’t tell this was made of toilet water,†beer buyer/drinker Chew Wei Lian told Bloomberg. “I don’t mind having it if it was in the fridge. I mean, it tastes just like beer, and I like beer.â€

The 33rd Oregon Brewers Festival returns after a two-year hiatus to Tom McCall Waterfront Park in Portland, Oregon, July 28
through July 30, 2022. There are some important differences in this year’s festival, which I’ve included below, along with a few
highlights.
Oregon’s longest-running brewfest will be three days long in 2022. This year, the festival has been downsized slightly to
accommodate the realities of 2022. High gas prices and challenges with airlines make travel more difficult, and more than half of
OBF’s attendees have historically come from outside the Portland area. The footprint of the fest is a little smaller, going from
the Morrison Bridge to Pine Street. Additionally, the parade is not happening this year, for reasons beyond our control. Despite
these differences, we anticipate this being one of the most lively OBFs yet, and all signs point to it being very well-attended.

Big Beer and small breweries have done their fair share of bickering over the years, on everything from tax breaks and supply-chain power to honesty in marketing, the meaning of independence and, yes, even pumpkin peach ales. ASTORIA, Ore. — The Buoy Beer Company is asking for help in cleaning up Pacific Northwest beaches after debris was washed down the Columbia River and out to sea during a collapse at one of their warehouses. The reward? Free beer, of course.
“We appreciate the overwhelming support from our community and our craft beer friends. You all have been reaching out, asking how to help and we figured out one important step you can help us out with,” Buoy said in the Facebook post.
They say the best way for people to help them is by getting out on the coastline to clean up debris.

Big news in the brewing industry as it was announced last night that Sapporo USA will acquire Stone Brewing of San Diego, Calif.
Stone Distribution Co. which distributes many craft brands throughout Southern California will not be part of the deal and will remain an intendent company.
Sapporo is the largest selling Asian beer in the U.S. and Stone is the 18th largest brewing company in the country with annual production of 326,281 barrels in 2021. It is the second major acquisition of a U.S. craft brewery for Sapporo with the purchase of Anchor Brewing in 2017.
“This is the right next chapter for Stone Brewing,†said Greg Koch, Co-Founder & Executive Chairman of Stone Brewing in a press release. “For 26 years, our amazing team has worked tirelessly to brew beers that have set trends and redefined expectations. To have the interest of a company like Sapporo in continuing the Stone story is a testament to the great beers we’ve created and will continue to create for our fans across the globe.â€
Sapporo will produce its Sapporo beers for U.S. distribution in Stone’s two breweries, in Escondido, California and Richmond, Virginia. Stone Brewing will continue to brew its beers at the two breweries, as well as operate its seven Tap Rooms and World Bistro & Gardens.

The craft brewery industry in the Des Moines area just keeps growing. Now 21 breweries call the region home.
In 1996, Court Avenue Brewing Co. opened its doors and remains the oldest in the metro area. Confluence and Exile celebrate a decade in business in 2022, and others such as 515 Brewing and Fox Brewing have stuck around. Just in the past two years, newcomers such as Lua, Kinship and 1717 opened to expand the craft brewery footprint in central Iowa.
The region’s not done with breweries quite yet. The newest trend brings established breweries such as Toppling Goliath, Big Grove, SingleSpeed and Backpocket to the area with taprooms opening in the next year.
