Even in its brewing "heyday" in the 1870's, Maine's old-time beer production was never really very substantial.
The peak year was most likely 1875, when 11,527 barrels were produced. That works out to 357,337 gallons.
If it sounds impressive, it really wasn't: the nation's total for that years was 8,383,720 barrels
(259,895,320 gallons!). As a result, brewers from Massachusetts, New York, New Hampshire and elsewhere
"helped out." Shown here are ads, both from 1899, from two such "helpers."
